Noted New York be-bop guitarist Joshua Breakstone has just added a stop in Baltimore to his world tour.(He tours twice each year in Japan, Europe and in the U.S.)

"Fire in velvet. A fitting description of Joshua Breakstone's jazz guitar."
The Santa Fe New Mexican, Paul Weidman

"Breakstone's playing emphasizes inventive, lyrical single-note melody lines. Though his fingers have been described as 'continual blur' onstage,he never lets frenetic technique detract from his interesting melodies which always have both intellegence and feeling behind them. Breakstone says 'Jazz should sing, be pretty to listen to, and feel good',and he is true to his philosophy. To anyone who has heard him, it is clear he is on his way to making his mark as one of the great jazz instrumentalists."

Joanne Schmoll in "Tin Pan Lady"
Jul 27, 2013 at 7:30 pm
Renowned actor and cabaret artist, Joanne Schmoll, presents "Tin Pan Lady", a celebration of the work of women songwriters from Tin Pan Alley. Her fabulous quartet includes vocalist Des're Dubose, Music Director Amy Conley on piano and Cindy Elliot on bass.

We are all familiar with the names Gershwin, Porter, Kern, Arlen, Berlin, and the other male composers and lyricists who helped shape the growth and development of American popular song during the first half of the 20th century. But where are the women’s names? Between 1920 and 1949, 178 women joined ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers); women like Kay Swift, Dorothy Fields, Dana Suesse, and Ann Ronell were among the most influential. Writing the music, the lyrics or
both in works such as I Can’t Give You Anything But Love, God Bless the Child, How High the Moon, Willow, Weep For Me, and What A Diff’rence a Day Made, women played an important role in shaping what has become known as The Great American Songbook. Through persistence, talent, and sheer love of the music, they broke down countless barriers, opening doors for future women artists in the music industry.

“There are any number of performers who can make the singing of a song a satisfying musical experience. There are fewer who can accomplish this and, at the same time, do justice to the lyrics. And there are fewer still who can make you feel that you are hearing a (familiar) song for the first time. Joanne Schmoll belongs to this select company, which is why I am such an admirer of her work.”

I don’t think anyone has ever hooked me with their music as quickly as Andrea did with hers. If you like music and songs that can whisk you away from all of your problems, away from your very era; songs that soothe and entertain; songs that tell a story, break your heart, then return you safely to the 21st century with your toe tapping and your fingers drumming on the table… Well, let’s just say, you’ll love Andrea Carlson too. ”

Bossalingo--Cuban and Brazilian Inspired Jazz
Nov 22, 2013 at 12:00 am
Inspired by the sounds and rhythms of Argentina, Cuba and Brazil, Bossalingo performs their original music with passion, using the common language of Jazz improvisation to unite all of these amazing styles into an unforgettable experience for the listener. The group performs selections from the recent Bossalingo release, "Steps Beyond", as well as some earlier originals from the first record and various Jazz standards. The styles of Tango, Jazz, Rumba, Samba, Milongo, Bossa Nova, Tumbao, and Guaguanco are all featured throughout the show.

The current line up features Baltimore composer/guitarist, Michael Joseph Harris, Didier Prossaird on piano, bassist Steve Zerlin, and drummer Mike Kuhl.

"Harris’s playing reflected Latin, jazz, folk and rock influences. Throughout the night, his nylon-string acoustic guitar work would prove inventive and melodic, and his guitar solo on the opener was tinged with blues." - from review of Blues Alley performance by Ken Avis, Capital Bop
